Back in early June, my mum and I decided to host an expedition for fellow Bigfoot enthusiasts in a secluded area in Southeastern NB. In collaboration with the NBBO (New Brunswick Bigfoot Organization), we brought over a dozen like-minded individuals into the woods with us. Many were strangers, but we all shared a common interest: Bigfoot. Whereas you might find this particular or odd, we believe in the paranormal and the unknown.
As we prepared for this mini expedition, a kind filmmaker and fellow outdoor enthusiast, Jared Carney, reached out and mentioned he wanted to make a documentary about New Brunswick and its Bigfoot sightings. We were thrilled by the prospect, as it meant sharing our passion and discoveries. Jared's excitement was contagious, and his vision for the documentary promised to capture not just the search for Bigfoot, but the camaraderie, the diverseness and dedication among the group.
On the day of the expedition, the weather was perfect, the sun peeked through the dense canopy of lush greenery, and the air was filled with the earthy scent of the pine trees. As we ventured deeper into the woods, Jared followed closely with his incredible cameraman Drew Gilbert.
As dusk approached, the forest transformed into a shadowy realm, and the thrill of the unknown heightened. We gathered around a campfire, sharing theories and speculating about the possibilities. Drew and Jared filmed our discussions and asked questions pertaining to the area and it’s history, keen to include the human element of our quest , the shared belief in something greater and the bonds forged in pursuit of the unknown.
Out of all the Cryptids and stories that have floated around New Brunswick relating to paranormal things, why Bigfoot?
I had been researching the Bigfoot for a separate, fictional story idea and that lead me to discovering the New Brunswick Bigfoot Organization. Once I discovered there was an NB-based group of people dedicated to this topic, it sparked me wanting to learn more and to tell a Bigfoot story through a New Brunswick lens. We have lots of thick forests here and I soon learned there were many accounts of strange encounters province-wide. I also just think that Bigfoot is a classic cryptid and one of the most fun ones, it has a very long history and really allows the imagination to run wild!
Was there a particular sighting or testimony that convinced you this was a story worth telling?
What convinced me this story was worth telling is that the New Brunswick Bigfoot Organization folks were so kind and welcomed me with open arms. I could tell they were good people and I wanted to explore their activities and beliefs in more depth. The opportunity to join them on a expedition to a Bigfoot hot-spot was something I couldn't pass up! My Director of Photography, Drew and I are also both avid outdoors people and love the wonder that being surrounded by nature can inspire. We live in a beautiful province and any excuse to show that off is worth it!
